Curriculum Objectives
(based on the Common Core Standards: http://www.corestandards.org)

Reading: Our guided reading time is a balanced literacy program that includes phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary.  We have mini-lessons during which new skills are presented, followed by ample time for students to practice those skills independently or in a small-group setting. During this time, students explore picture books, novels, and leveled readers.

English Language Arts:  Our English/Language Arts program integrates writing, spelling, and grammar throughout all subject areas.  Students are required to master high frequency words for third grade, and use them correctly in their daily writing.  We teach grammar, spelling, and writing skills in isolation, then integrate them into other content areas.

Math:  Our math program involves cumulative review and assessment.   The children are keeping a vocabulary journal to help prepare them for the CRCT and the terminology used on the test.  We also do weekly centers and review activities to encourage a cooperative, hands-on learning experience.

Social Studies: Third grade is responsible for several themes, including: state, local and national government, roots of democracy, ancient Greece, influential American figures, map skills, and economics.

Science: Our science curriculum includes weathering, soils, fossils, habitats, magnets, pollution, rocks and minerals, and heat energy.  Our goal is to provide as many hands on “experiments” as possible, using our new science lab!

Computer Skills: We work on many technology skills, such as: creating word processing documents, creating power point presentations, blogging, and other research skills.  Students will use different types of programs to enhance learning in other curriculum areas.
