A Middle School Athletic Program is offered at PineyGroveMiddle School for seventh and eighth grade students. The Athletic Program offers students an opportunity to learn the team concepts associated with self-discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, and hard, clean, competition. The Piney Grove Middle School Athletic Program offers competitive interscholastic opportunities for young men and young women in the following sports:Football, Basketball, Track, Golf and Cheerleading (Football & Basketball). The Athletic Program is funded solely by gate receipts collected at the sport venues, concessions, donations and through fund raisers.
In order to try out for and participate in interscholastic athletics, a physical examination and insurance waiver are required for each participant. All physicals must be on the physical form provided by PineyGroveMiddle School. This physical form may be picked up from a coach or downloaded from this website. Please note that per FCSS guidelines, physicals that expire in the middle of any sport season will be considered expired prior to its beginning. In addition, for a student to be eligible to participate in interscholastic athletic activities for a season, he/she must be enrolled in the school for which he/she will participate, be in the seventh or eighth grade, meet academic requirements, meet the age requirement, and have not exceeded four semesters of participation.
To meet academic requirements, a student may not fail more than 2 classes during a semester. The grades from the previous semester will determine eligibility for the current semester (Ex. Grades from Spring 2012 will determine eligibility for Fall 2012 participation.).Students who are not eligible during a semester may not try out for the interscholastic sport that occurs in the following semester if the tryouts occur during the semester of ineligibility. However, students may try out for the interscholastic sport if they become eligible at the completion of the semester, at the discretion of the coach.
To be eligible to participate in interscholastic athletic activities each day, a student must be in school for at least half of the school day.If a student is absent on Friday, he/she may participate in weekend activities.A student who is in In-school Suspension (ISS) or is Out-of-School Suspended (OSS) is not eligible to participate that day, and will not become eligible until he/she is admitted back into his/her classes.Students who are in ISS or have OSS on a Friday may not participate in weekend athletic activities.A student who is sent from his/her home school to Gateway Academy may not participate in Piney Grove interscholastic athletic activities.
All Piney Grove students are urged to participate in the many competitive interscholastic athletic activities offered through the school. Please remember that participation in athletics is an extracurricular program and should not interfere with the academic progress of the student. Many studies have shown that participation on an athletic team often helps the academic success of students. Participation is a privilege and offers no guarantee of individual playing time. All student-athletes will need to earn playing time. Positive support from our parents will help to establish lifelong values in our student-athletes,and will help to establish a work ethic that will sustain each young man/young woman in his/her future endeavors.
