About Dolch Words

Dolch words, also referred to as high frequency or sight words, are words most often found in print.  These words are difficult because they generally do not follow the phonics rules.  They do not follow letter-sound relationships or spelling patterns so they can not be easily decoded.  In order for students to retain these difficult words they need many opportunities to experience and manipulate them.

You can help your child practice these important words by helping them with some of these activities:
  1. Use yarn or string to form your words.
  2. Read a story.  See how many times you can find your word.
  3. See how many times you can write your word in one minute.
  4. Form your words out of small objects such as coins or buttons.
  5. Play with your food.  Spell your word then eat it.
  6. Use colored markers to copy your words in as many different color combinations as possible.
  7. Find the letters of your word in the newspaper.  Cut out the letters and spell your word.
  8. Write words that rhyme with  each of your words.
  9. Decorate your flash cards.
  10. Write a message to someone using as many words as you can.
