2nd Grade
Welcome to second grade!
We look forward to working with all of our wonderful Kelly Mill 2nd grade families!
We are very excited about our new CORE Curriculum. We have spent the past year comparing the new standards to our previous ones and are happy to share that the changes are quite positive. We strongly feel that these changes will be most beneficial for our students at Kelly Mill. Many of the standards did not change so there will still be a great level of comfort and familiarity for everyone involved. We also look forward to rolling out our new Forsyth County Report Card.
Entering second grade is like opening a book to a new adventure. Fountas and Pinnell and individualized running records are used to determine differentiated reading levels. Students receive reading instruction through guided reading, mentor texts, and the Houghton Mifflin reading series. They will receive this instruction in a number of different settings including small groups, individualized instruction, and whole group lessons. There is a strong focus on fluency, vocabulary, story elements and reading comprehension skills. We will use fiction as well as nonfiction selections to teach our standards. RAZ KIDS, a computer program that is accessible from home, is used as a supplemental tool in some 2nd grade classrooms.
Throughout the year, manipulatives will be used to strengthen math concepts in operations and algebraic thinking, place value, measurement and data, geometry, and development of multiplication. Many hands on experiences are planned to fully engage the students as well as deepen their levels of understanding. It is important that the student be able to perform a task for a given standard, and explain their thinking using both oral and written expression.
Interesting science units include motions in the sky, matter, energy and life cycles. Social Studies units cover Georgia's past, Georgia's places, our economy and America's government. We will also be integrating these units of study into our literacy programs.
Writing is an important aspect of the 2nd grade curriculum. It is exciting to watch the progress made in this area during the 2nd grade year. We will learn to write within the 3 writing genres as well as responding to literature. The students will also write about concepts in math, science and social studies.
Second grade is a time of great development for your child. We hope you find it to be a very rewarding year filled with excitement about learning and amazing progress.
