First Grade Curriculum
Our reading instruction is based around a balanced literacy approach. We instruct students in guided reading, phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary/sight words, writing process and content integration. In first grade we individualize reading instruction to meet the needs of the diverse learners in our classrooms.
We will be using the Houghton-Mifflin math curriculum
with an added component called Expressions. This program will allow us to address new mathematical concepts while gaining a deeper understanding of them through hands on experiences, continuous practice, and mathematical games throughout the year. We also use supplemental math resources depending upon the needs of individual students/classes.
In first grade social studies, we focus on learning about producers and consumers, map skills, landforms, American folktales, and historical figures. The students will learn how certain historical figures displayed positive character traits.
In science this year, your child will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with the following science themes: Animals, plants, magnets, weather, and light/sound.
