Kindergarten

Kindergarten at Big Creek marks a new beginning for five year olds as the foundation for a positive attitude toward learning is laid. Within our kindergarten setting each child's capacity to learn is nurtured with developmentally appropriate practices.

Because one of our primary goals is to develop successful readers and writers, the kindergarten experience lays the groundwork for literacy skills. Emphasis is placed on the concepts of print, knowledge of letter names, phonemic awareness, and writing skills.

Our mathematics program is the adopted Houghton-Mifflin Math for Georgia in conjunction with the Georgia Math Frameworks.  The math is aligned with the Georgia Performance Standards for kindergarten.  Math instruction is based on developing a solid foundation in the language and basic concepts of all areas of mathematics.  The concepts covered are: numbers and number sense, positionals, patterning, graphing, and money. Hands-on, active involvement with concrete models and experiences are the basis for this mathematical understanding.

Science units of study include: (l) processing skills (2) day and night sky (3) rocks and soils (4) physical attributes, composition of materials, motion and gravity (5) living and non living things. These concepts and skills are taught formally and informally and promote active learning and hands-on activities.

Social Studies at the kindergarten level concentrates on the environments closest to the child: Self, Friends, Families, Neighborhoods, and World Around Them. Other areas of study include character education, health and safety, music, art, physical education, and technology.
