Welcome to the Language Arts Department at North Forsyth Middle School!

    The language arts program at North Forsyth Middle School, is based on the Georgia Standards of Excellence (  https://www.georgiastandards.org/Georgia-Standards/Pages/ELA-6-8.aspx)  and integrates speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, listening and viewing and grammar skills. Our English program instructors use the writing process as the foundation for the teaching of writing, as well as for integration of vocabulary and grammar usage concepts. The different genres of writing (informative/explanatory, narrative, argumentative/persuasive) are emphasized through multiple facets and carefully developed lesson plans and assignments.  The emphasis in writing is to provide evidence from a reading passage to support  analysis, reflection, and research.  Language Arts classes utilize many evidence based techniques such as: RACE, ACE or DBQ.  Students are instructed on how to analyze and reflect on either a non-fiction or fiction piece. Students read a variety of literature, including short stories, poems, novels, dramas, and essays. Our use of technology helps implement and enhance the language arts curriculum.

    The goal of each teacher is to enable each student to become competent in each of the following areas:

    • COMMUNICATIONS: A variety of literary segments – reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and representing with an emphasis on reading and writing.
    • SENTENCES AND PARAGRAPHS: How to revise and improve sentences and paragraphs, including how to achieve unity and coherence and how to use effective transitions between paragraphs in a longer piece of writing.
    • GRAMMAR, USAGE, AND MECHANICS: Basic grammar rules, followed by example, followed by exercise, as well as spelling instruction with spelling rules.
    • REFERENCE AND RESEARCH: Accessing information to write, do research, hone speaking and listening skills, learning strategies for studying and taking tests, and developing visual  literacy.
