Advanced Placement Literature and Composition
Summer Reading Assignment 2011-2012
Welcome to AP Lit! I look forward to sharing your senior year with you. Your summer reading assignment is to hone your basic knowledge of some of the elements of college level reading and comprehension. To do this, you will read How to Read Literature like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster (I will issue you a copy of the book) and create a note card for each chapter (including the interlude and envoi). You do not have to create a note card for the introduction since I have done that for you in the example, but do read the introduction. You will create a total of 29 note cards.
Each note card should be labeled as shown in the example with your name, the chapter number, and the chapter title. Each will contain a summary of Foster’s points and a connection to the world around us as seen in movies, music, books, short stories, poetry, or television. Do not regurgitate examples that Foster uses.
These note cards will be due the second day of class and will comprise your first formative grade. If you are late with the assignment, you will lose ten points for each day. We will draw on the knowledge we gain from this text throughout the year, so please do digest what you are reading!
Please e-mail me if you have any questions (firstname.lastname@example.org). Enjoy your summer!
