• Hello , welcome to RMS Social Studies!


    The Social Studies Department at Riverwatch Middle School follows the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS). These standards incorporate instruction in the following areas: History, Economics, Geography, and Government of the State of Georgia.  Instruction is tailored to meet the academic needs of the On-Level and Advanced students with care and precision. Listed below are the integral pieces of both levels of Social Studies in 8th grade. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact any teacher on our team. He/she will be more than happy to assist.

    On-Level

    Advanced

    ·         Homework:  Students will have nightly homework which will emphasize completion of study guide notes and studying for both formative and summative assessments. 

     

    ·         Students will complete a variety of mini-projects and written responses in order to assess their grasp of concepts as well as to extend learning.  

     

    ·         Reading Materials:  Students will read a variety of reading material which includes both primary and secondary sources.  This reading material will be at a level that is appropriate for the on-level student.   

     

    ·         Students will participate in simulations which provide real life experiences in order to help them gain a better understanding of abstract concepts. 

    ·         Homework:  Students will have nightly homework which will emphasize completion of study guide notes and studying for both formative and summative assessments.

     

    ·         Students will participate in more extensive projects and written responses in order to assess their grasp of concepts as well as to extend concepts to meet the needs of the advanced learner.

     

    ·         In advanced classes, there is a heavy use of technology for note-taking, activities, and projects.

     

    ·         Reading Materials:  Higher level reading material, mainly focused on primary source documents, is used to supplement curriculum topics.

     

    ·         Students will participate in more extensive simulations which provide real life experiences with an emphasis on problem solving and analysis of historical concepts.
