    MD Junior Club

MD Junior is a club that was created in the 2012-2013 school year at South by Ash Panakam and Shivani Rangaswamy. The club formed at South is a chapter of the national MD Junior program created by Shaun Verma. Shaun created MD Junior in order to foster and encourage the growth of young aspiring doctors through selfless service. The club meets once a month and has guest speakers at each meeting. MD Junior also participates in events outside of school that are related to the healthcare industry. We are currently the largest chapter in the world.

We meet at least one Tuesday afternoon a month in the War Eagle dining hall right after school. You can contact us by email with any questions about joining or you can ask an officer in person and we will answer any questions you may have.

MD Junior operates on a point system and each member is required to have a given number of points by the end of the year. You can earn 1 point for attending a meeting and at least 1 point for attending an event. We keep detailed records of meetings so that we know whether you attended a meeting or not or if you attended an event that you signed up for. At the end of the year, certificates are given out for proof of participation in events and service hours. You can only obtain this certificate if you reach the number of points required by the end of the year. Although we have a large number of people in MD Junior, we will ensure that there are enough meetings and events combined for everyone to earn the point requirement.

    Events We Have Participated In

~ Cath Lab Tours at Northside Hospital: We organized several groups of students to visit the Cath Lab at Northside Hospital. Students were able to enter the lab, observe the equipment and talk to the lab staff about their personal experiences.

~Paint Fest: Students met at the Foundation of Hospital Art and helped paint murals that would later be sent to hospitals all around the world.

~ Alzheimer’s Car Wash: Members volunteered at a car wash where all proceeds were donated to help patients who suffer from Alzheimers.

~ Medshare: We organized and packaged medical equipment which was shipped off to underdeveloped countries in South America and Africa.

~ CPR classes: We organized classes with the YMCA to give us a discount on CPR classes. The students that attended and passed the short test at the end of the class obtained a CPR license.

~ Global Medical-Mentor Mission to Honduras: This was a medical trip where a group of 11 students went to Honduras to help in medical camps for those who cannot afford medical treatment.

All information about an event is given at the club meeting and then an email is sent out the following night or the next day for people to sign up for the events. Not everyone who signs up is able to go because there are more people than slots. All signups for events are based on a first come first serve process. For events such as the March of Dimes and CPR classes, everyone is allowed to participate.
