Our Counseling Philosophy
“Supporting Success of the Whole Child”
As school counselors at Mashburn Elementary, we believe all students can learn and exhibit qualities of good character and resilient problem solvers as well as utilize their individual abilities and talents to master and apply skills to become college and/or career ready. Mashburn’s School Counseling Program infuses 3 components to cultivate this philosophy: The Learner Profile, Social & Emotional Learning and The 7 Mindsets.
We use the Learner Profile as a foundational framework in our classroom guidance, small groups, individual counseling sessions and the programs that we oversee- to increase student achievement and create a population of young people that respect and value themselves and all others.
We believe that through Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), students acquire the skills needed at school, at home and in their community to:
- Recognize and manage emotions
- Develop caring and concern for others
- Establish positive relationships
- Make responsible decisions
- Handle challenging situations effectively
The Mashburn School Counseling program is an integral part of students' daily educational environment, we use SEL to produce positive outcomes in student behavior and learning. These outcomes include: increased academic achievement, improved attendance, social-behavioral skill development, individual planning and family/community involvement.
Mashburn’s school culture is based on the premise of The 7 Mindsets. Through these mindsets, we can advocate for the wellbeing of ALL children we serve by alleviating barriers to success and creating an environment conducive to learning.
