Introduction to 2022 Summer Programs Offered
Through Forsyth County School System
The programs listed below are opportunities for students. Only those noted will hire district staff for summer positions. If you are interested in applying for a summer program position, the deadline for accepting all applications or emails of interest is 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 4, 2022 or until positions are filled. Please note that any individual serving in a certified professional position for summer school will be paid at the FY 22 state-based hourly rate. Any individual serving in a classified role for summer school will be paid at his/her true hourly rate.

1. Extended School Year (ESY)
Program Leader: Kristi Quinn/Lisa Williams
Location: Kelly Mill Elementary School/Forsyth Central High School (iFocus) and Virtual
Dates: Monday-Thursday June 6, 2022 through June 30, 2022
The system's Extended School Year (ESY) program is for identified special education students. The program will run four days per week (Monday - Thursday), from 8:00-12:00 (staff hours). Teachers must have appropriate special education certification to apply for teaching positions. If you are interested in applying for a position with ESY, complete the ESY application. Once you have completed the application, Ms. Horak will review and forward to Kristi Quinn/Lisa Willilams for approval.
*The IFocus program will continue with a six-week format and will run from June 7th-June 30th and July 12th- July 22nd.
2. High School Summer School
Program Leader: Mary Cooper
Location: Otwell Middle School
Dates: Teacher Preplanning: May 31, 2022
Week One: June 1-3, 2022 (Wednesday-Friday)
Week Two-Five: June 6-30, 2022 (Monday-Thursday)
Morning Sessions: 8:00 am -11:30 a.m. GSE Algebra I, GSE Geometry, GSE Algebra II, AMDM, and Pre-calculus will be offered for recovery credit only. Rising ninth graders who are entering high school with weak preparation for Algebra I will participate in an Algebra Readiness course (noncredit). Only teachers with certification should apply. Experienced teachers of these subjects will be given preference. Some positions will also require additional certifications in Special Education or ESOL. Students will register through their school counselor and no course fee will be assessed due to Cares Act funding. Transportation and lunch will be provided at no cost to students. Any EOC (End of Course) associated with these courses will be administered June 27-30, 2022.
Afternoon Sessions: 12:00 pm - 3:30 p.m. 9th Lit/Comp, 10th Lit Comp, American Lit/Comp, World History, US History, Government, Econ, Physical Science, Biology, Earth Systems, and Environmental Science will be offered for credit recovery. Only teachers with certification should apply. Experienced teachers of these subjects will be given preference. Some positions will also require additional certifications in Special Education or ESOL. Students will register through their school counselor and no course fee will be assessed due to Cares Act funding. Transportation and lunch will be provided at no cost to students. Any EOC associated with these courses will be administered June 27-30, 2022.

3. Middle School Learning Camp

Location: Otwell Middle School

Week One: June 1-3 (Wednesday-Friday)
Week Two-Four: June 6-30 (Monday-Thursday)
Morning Sessions: 8:00 am-11:30 a.m.– Rising 6th-rising 8th graders who have been identified by their schools will be invited to participate in a middle school ELA and math readiness camp (noncredit). Only teachers with certification should apply. Experienced teachers of these subjects will be given preference. Some positions will also require additional certifications in Special Education or ESOL. Students will register through their school counselor and no course fee will be assessed due to Cares Act funding. Transportation and lunch will be provided at no cost to students.

4. Elementary School Learning Camp

Dates: Teacher Preplanning: May 31, 2022
Week One: June 1-3, 2022 (Wednesday-Friday)
Week Two-Five: June 6-30, 2022 (Monday-Thursday)
Morning Sessions: 8:00 a.m.-11:45 a.m.– Rising 1st-5th graders who have been identified by their schools will be invited to participate in an elementary school ELA and math readiness camp. Teachers and paraprofessionals with certification should apply. Experienced teachers of these subjects will be given preference. Some positions will also require additional certifications in Special Education or ESOL. Students will be identified and invited by their base schools. No course fee will be assessed due to Cares Act funding. Transportation and lunch will be provided at no cost to students.
5. Forsyth Virtual High School Offerings
Program Leader: Drew Hayes
Location: Forsyth Virtual Academy
Date: June 1, 2022 – July 13, 2022
Forsyth Virtual Academy will offer students the option to earn credit for High School Personal Fitness, Health, Spanish 3, US Government, Economics, Visual Arts I, Geometry A, and Introduction to Healthcare Science. Rising high school and high school students can sign up through ClassLink by clicking on the FVA Summer Registration icon. The cost for .5 credit courses (Personal Fitness, Health, US Government, Economics, Geometry A) is $247.50 per course and 1.0 Credit courses (Spanish 3, Intro to Healthcare Science, Visual Arts I) start at $495. 6. Georgia Virtual School (GAVS)
Program Leader: Jason Naile
Georgia Virtual School (GAVS) will be holding classes this summer. This summer school program is for initial and recovery credit for most core classes in the areas of English, Science, Social Studies, Math, and Foreign Languages. Some electives are offered as well. Any EOC testing needs from GAVS courses will be given July 11-14, 2022, at the students’ base high school.

Middle school courses are $250 per course. All summer middle school courses offered by GAVS are considered remedial.

Students should contact their school counselor or GAVS facilitator for information how to enroll. Courses are not taught by Forsyth County Schools educators; however, each student will have an FCS facilitator available during the summer session. All facilitators have been secured for summer 2022. All questions and concerns about GAVS courses should be directed to Jason Naile at jnaile@forsyth.k12.ga.us or 770-887-2461 x 204408. Jason Naile will forward an email to Tracie Rutan with the names of the facilitators assigned and amount of the facilitator fee.
7. Mountain Education Charter High School (MECHS)

Mountain Education Charter High School (MECHS) is a collaborative effort of Bartow, Cherokee, Dawson, Elbert, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Hall, Lumpkin, Murray, Pickens, Rabun, Towns, Union, and White County School Systems. The MECHS collaborative organization also operates sites in Habersham and Stephens Counties. MECHS is an academic, self-paced, individualized, evening high school that serves students who are seeking a non-traditional school environment and who desire a Georgia high school diploma.
MECHS also serves students who need to make up missed credit from their regular high school, enabling them to stay on academic track and graduate with their peers.
MECHS is a year-round high school that offers all Georgia required curriculum courses as well as a variety of vocational courses and state-mandated testing. While students cannot enroll at Mountain Education this summer for credit recovery, they can enroll for initial credit for courses in Math, ELA, Science and Social Studies. Students should check with their school counselors for more information. Tuition for summer classes is $150 per course.
