Course Overview:
This class is designed to introduce students into careers related to Healthcare. 6th and 7th grade level study 3 different careers along with Medical Terminology and Safety. We also have 2-year-long 8th grade classes to help prepare the students for the Healthcare Pathway in high school.
Courses:
6th Grade -This course provides students with an exploratory introduction to several healthcare careers and the safety procedures and interpersonal communication skills required for them. The course will enable students to receive initial exposure to healthcare science skills; attitudes applicable to healthcare including the concepts of health, wellness, and preventative care; and the responsibilities of today’s healthcare provider. Mastery of skills through project-based learning, technical skills practice, and group activities will provide students with an opportunity to decide if they want to continue this course of study in high school and/or at a post-secondary institution.
7th Grade- This course provides students with an introduction to various healthcare careers and the safety procedures and interpersonal communication skills required for them. The course will enable students to receive initial exposure to healthcare science skills; attitudes applicable to healthcare including the concepts of health, wellness, and preventative care; and the responsibilities of today’s healthcare provider. Mastery of skills through project-based learning, technical skills practice, and group activities will provide students with an opportunity to decide if they want to continue this course of study in high school and/or at a post-secondary institution. This course also introduces students to the concepts of teamwork and leadership in healthcare.
8th Grade- This course is offered as a year-long class for students who wish to pursue the Healthcare Pathway in high school or college. Students can sign up for this class in the spring before their 8th grade year. This class is developed to introduce different body systems and will include anatomy, diseases of the body systems, careers associated with the system, and medical terminology. Soft skills will also be introduced as a source of accountability. Mastery of skills through project-based learning, technical skills practice, and group activities will provide students with an opportunity to decide if they want to continue this course of study in high school and/or at a post-secondary institution.
HOSA Invitation:
Students are also able to join the HOSA organization (Future Health Professionals). This organization emphasizes the future of Healthcare and how it can help serve students interested in becoming a Healthcare professional.
