    Important Information about Summer Courses

As Lambert students make plans for the summer, we wanted you to be aware of important information regarding summer courses.

Students taking online, self-pay courses over the summer should be aware of the following:

    • Taking a course over the summer does not guarantee the next course in the sequence.
    • No changes are made to course requests until  after a student completes a summer course and requests to put that course on their transcript (FVA courses are automatically added to a student's transcript).
    • Lambert does not advise taking courses over the summer when a student wants to continue on in that subject area in the fall, as students are often best prepared for the next course in the sequence when they take a full-year course.  Colleges are not looking for students to take courses over the summer to get ahead.
    • Students who take a course over the summer may not be able to then go into honors or AP classes at Lambert in the fall depending on the course. Summer courses are very short and therefore do not prepare students for the rigors of honors or AP. Examples below:
    • Students who take 10 th lit over the summer between 9 th and 10 th grade will not be able to advance to AP American Lit/Language in 10 th grade.
    • th grade students who take Intro to Software over the summer will not be able to take AP Computer Science Principles in 9 th grade. The only AP course available to 9 th grade students is AP Human Geography.
    • Students who take any math class over the summer will not be able to advance to the Honors or AP version of the next course in the sequence (for example, students who take Adv. Algebra over the summer will not be able to advance to AP Precalculus, students who take Algebra over the summer will not be able to advance to Geometry Honors).
    • Students who take Geometry A over the summer are very rarely prepared for Accelerated Advanced Algebra with Geometry B.
    • If a rising 9 th grade student takes Geometry A through Forsyth Virtual Academy, they can move into Accelerated Advanced Algebra: Concepts and Connections (formerly GSE Accelerated Geometry B/Advanced Algebra) at Lambert next year because FVA's Geometry A course is aligned to our district standards; however, most students struggle in the next course when they attempt to accelerate in this way.
    • If, as a rising 9 th grader, a student takes Geometry A through Georgia Virtual School (GAVS) or any other platform that is not Forsyth Virtual School, they will NOT be able to take Accelerated Advanced Algebra: Concepts and Connections (formerly GSE Accelerated Geometry B/Advanced Algebra) at Lambert next year. The reason for this is that non-Forsyth County platforms do not prepare students for our course, and Forsyth County has seen that students who take Geometry A over the summer through a non-Forsyth County platform are often not academically prepared for Accelerated Advanced Algebra: Concepts and Connections (formerly GSE Accelerated Geometry B/Advanced Algebra). If a student takes Geometry A over the summer through a non-Forsyth County platform, they will be placed in on-level Geometry, and first semester will be coded as Geometry Support. They will then complete Geometry B in the spring.
