Welcome to DeSana Middle School's Reading Department! 

Following the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE), sixth and seventh grade students continue to build their skills in the area of reading that improves comprehension and critical thinking. This course focuses on developing proficient, critical, and active readers through the use of research-based reading strategies before, during and after the reading process. These strategies include questioning, monitoring, visualizing, making connections, summarizing, inferring, and researching. Students improve their skills by reading literary and informational selections of increasing length, complexity, and rigor.

This course also focuses on inspiring students to become lifelong readers by promoting student choice of reading material, providing opportunities to engage in independent reading, and creating an environment that encourages discussion and critical thinking.
