- Canvas Information & Feedback
-
For the 2023-24 school year, Forsyth County Schools has moved away from itsLearning and to Canvas as our Learning Management System - the online portal where academic coursework is posted. Last year, teachers and some students were introduced to Canvas - this year, it is a learning curve for our entire community.
This page is intended to give you some helpful information about navigating Canvas, and will also allow us to collect some information about your experience with it.

Accessing Canvas 🚪
Students will access Canvas through ClassLink. This will automatically log them in with their FCS credentials.
Parents will access Canvas from https://forsyth.instructure.com and log in with their own credentials.
- Parents must create an account first - use the link in the upper right corner of the sign-in form to do so. Here's a guide for how to do that.
- Parent accounts are considered Observer accounts, and you must have your child's Pairing code to do so.
- If you have more than one student, each student must generate a Pairing code for your account.
- Each Pairing code is good for only one Observer account - so if two parents both want to observe their child, the child must generate a Pairing code for one parent, and then generate a second code for the other parent.

Navigating Canvas 🚩
For the 2023-24 school year, the expectation is that every course has a "Planner" page that gives students an overview of the current week's learning activities, and links to assignments in Canvas or other portals (Google, Microsoft, third-party learning tools, etc.)
When an observer navigates to a course in Canvas, they should check the course's Home Page for current assignments. In the Canvas Parent app, once you access a course, click Front Page at the top of the window.
-
Canvas Calendar 📅
The Calendar feature in Canvas will show a student all dated Assignments and Quizzes posted in all of their classes. As the year progresses, and our community becomes more familiar with using Canvas, this feature will be used more and more. We anticipate using the calendar in a much more integrated fashion for the 2024-25 school year.
- Students who are taking virtual classes through FVA or GAVS may find their calendar for those courses to be much more important, as those courses more heavily rely on them to communicate due dates to students. (Students in face-to-face courses are reminded by the teacher of the course.)
- Teachers who tend to post their assignments in other portals - Google, Microsoft, third-party tools - may have fewer dates posted on their course's calendar. Please check those courses' Home Page planners for more specifics.
-
Grades in Canvas 📈
While Canvas has the ability to maintain and report grades on assignments, it is not the primary source of a student's current grade.
- Teachers may have other assignments for students to do - for example, in-class, hands-on work - that do not have an assignment in Canvas.
- Some assignments in Canvas may be only part of an overall grade for a learning task.
To view the accurate record of a student's overall course grades, parents should visit Parent Portal.
