Mentoring Program FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Forsyth County Schools Mentoring Program?
The Forsyth County Schools Mentoring Program connects caring adult mentors with students to provide encouragement, support and positive role modeling. Mentors help students build confidence, develop social skills and feel more connected to their school community.
Who can become a mentor?
Mentors may include community members, business partners, school staff and other approved volunteers who are committed to making a difference in a student’s life.
What will the mentor do with the child?
The mentor will meet with their mentee at a scheduled time during the school day on school grounds. They will meet at least 30 minutes per week. While together, the two may read, talk, study or just be friends. The mentor may also help your child with class assignments, personal goals and for older students, career or college choices.
Who can request a mentor for a student?
Parents, teachers, school support staff and school administrators. Unfortunately, we do not have enough mentors for each child, but our goal is to increase the number of mentors each year.
What is the process for becoming a mentor?
The first step to becoming a Forsyth County Schools Mentor is to complete our Mentor Application and attend a training session. At the training, potential mentors will complete a background check form. Once the background check has been processed and a mentor is clear to begin mentoring, their application will be forwarded to the school of their choice.
What is the time commitment as a mentor?
We ask mentors to meet with their mentee for 30 minutes per week for the duration of the school year. If you are unable to attend a weekly session, we ask you to communicate with the mentee (if you know ahead of time) or school during your absence.
