Overview

Welcome to the Forsyth County Schools System's Transition Services. The Transition Services Office has been established to serve non-English speaking students and their parents. The Cumming/Forsyth Changing Demographics Task Force identified the need for a central location to serve students and their families that would support and embrace the challenges of diversity within the community.  Please see our services provided below.

Forsyth County Schools has a centralized registration process and does not register students at individual schools.  Registration is available by appointment at the Student Registration Center, located at 1140 Dahlonega Hwy, Cumming, GA 30040.  To help make this transition a smooth one for both students and their families, it is important that you are informed of the requirements for new students entering the Forsyth County School System.

Who may register the student?  The biological, foster or adoptive parent must enroll the student.  If the student is not living with the biological, foster, or adoptive parent, temporary guardianship must be applied for from the Probate Court located at 112 West Maple St, Cumming, GA 30040 (770-781-2140) and a copy of the receipt must be presented during registration.

Residency:  To enroll in Forsyth County Schools, the student's parent(s) or legal guardian(s) and the student must be a full-time resident of Forsyth County, Georgia.

Entering Kindergarten and First Grade:  According to Georgia law, children must be five years old on or before September 1 in order to enroll in kindergarten and six years old on or before September 1 to enroll in first grade.  The only exceptions are students who were legal residents in another state for a period of two years immediately prior to moving to Georgia and are age five on or before December 31 and who attended an accredited public kindergarten in another state or regional association or the equivalent thereof, may enroll in public kindergarten.  Students who are six on or before December 31 and who attended an accredited public school in another state or regional association or equivalent thereof, may enroll in first grade.

Temporary grade placement will be assigned by proof of age (grades KK or 01) or age-appropriate grade.  An official request signed by the parent or guardian for prior records will be sent to the prior school for verification of grade placement by the local school.

Documentation:  Below are the items needed in order to complete the registration process.  For a checklist of required registration items please click here.  Forsyth County Schools must have all the documentation before a student begins his/her first day of school.  If you are missing any documents at the time of your appointment, it is ok.  Please keep your appointment and provide the documents you have.  We will send an upload link to your email address so that you may easily provide any missing documents.  Click each item for a detailed description and examples.
