Testing on Chromebooks

Below you will find shortcuts for quick fixes on Chromebooks. These shortcuts can resolve 95% of the issues that come up during testing periods.

Tips for Testing:

  • When you move a Chromebook from one location to another, it is best to turn off the device and then turn it back on. (This allows the wireless card to access the closest access point instead of holding on to the access point from the previous location.)

  • Do not login to the Chromebook to start the test. (The app is outside of any login and will not work properly if the student tries to login.)

  • Turning off the screen magnifier on the Chromebook may be helpful for some students. On the bottom right-hand side, click on the setup section, and you can turn it off under "Accessibility". (If the app is open, press Ctrl+Alt+brightness-down key to zoom out or press Ctrl+Atl+brightness-up to zoom in.)

  • If a problem occurs within the testing app, press refresh (circular arrow) and the power button simultaneously. (This will do a "hard restart" and solves most problems with Chromebooks.)

  • Closing the Chromebook does not perform a full reset. (Closing the lid does technically turn it off, but it does not do a full reset after opening it up. A preferable method is to hold the power button down to turn the device off or on.)

  • Only replace a computer with another computer if a problem exists with the physical computer (i.e. keyboard not working, will not charge, etc.) not the testing software. (If a problem occurs with the testing software, try powering the device off and then back on. Replacing a computer with another computer could cause a delay in the students' testing due to TSM requirements.)

  • Double check your volume settings to make sure it is turned up and unmuted. (For use with headphones)

  • If the onscreen keyboard appears and you do not want it to, you can click on the bottom right of the screen and change this feature into accessibility mode.

  • Do not pre-open the app and then close the Chromebook in an attempt to prepare the device for the user.

  • Turn ChromeVox (Voice Feedback AKA Built in Chrome Screen Reader) on or off from any page application- Ctrl+Shift and Z

  • Reset the screen scale to the default setting- Ctrl+Shift and 0

  • Switch between keyboard languages/Layouts- Ctrl+Shift and Space

  • Switch on/off high contrast mode- Ctrl+Search and H

  • Forced restart- Ctrl+Refresh+Power

  • Increase the screen scale, making items appear larger on your screen- Ctrl+Shift and +

  • Decrease the screen scale, making items appear smaller on your screen - Ctrl+Shift and -

  • Rotate your screen 90 degrees. The refresh key is located where the F3 key would be located on typical keyboards- Ctrl+Shift+Refresh/F3 (the circle arrow key)

  • Toggle Caps Lock. The Search key has a magnifying glass on it and is in place of the Caps Lock key on typical keyboards- Alt+Search

  • To open a keyboard shortcut cheat sheet (Only works when signed into an account)- Ctrl+Alt+? (or Ctrl+Alt+/)

  • Red Circle around Mouse Cursor

    2. Settings->Advanced(bottom)->Manage Accessibility Features->Mouse and Touchpad->Disable "Highlight the mouse cursor when it is moving"

  • Large Mouse Cursor Fix
