Originally created as North Forsyth Junior High that fed into the Forsyth County High, the school first opened its doors to students in 1981 with 382 seventh through ninth graders.  The school was located at the current North Forsyth High location and its first principal was Mr. Michael Grzeskiewicz. The campus was expanded to add a new wing for high school students, allowing the original building to house middle school students. When the population at both schools grew beyond the building capacity, a new middle school building was constructed on adjacent property in 1997. The building was a new construction prototype, which has been replicated across the county multiple times and also modified into a two-story design. It received classroom additions and renovations in 1999.
In 2017 the bandroom was expanded and renovated and an addition was built on to the Media Center.
