Otwell Middle first opened its doors on August 26, 1974, as Forsyth County’s first free standing middle school.  The building was named after Mr. Roy Pilgrim Otwell, a life-long community leader, businessman and former mayor of Cumming.

“Mr. Roy”, as he was often called, knew that education was key in developing a thriving and growing community.  As owner of the Forsyth County News, he called on other civic leaders to help transform Forsyth County from a small agricultural town to one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. 

In 1981 a ninth grade was added, changing the school to a junior high that fed into the county’s one high school, Forsyth County High. In 1989, Otwell converted back to a middle school as the ninth grade was transferred to Forsyth Central.  Due to the student growth at Central during the 1990s, Otwell was relocated to a new building across the street on Tribble Gap Road.  The current building opened in 2001. 

Originally the home of the “Bullpups” Otwell’s mascot was updated to “Bulldogs” in 2009 to align with Forsyth Central’s athletics program.  Over the years, Otwell has boasted several championship titles in both basketball and track.  Here at Otwell, we pride ourselves on instilling a sense of teamwork and determination in all of our athletic programs, and are pleased to say our Intramural Soccer Team is the best in the county.
