Student Clubs and Activities
Art Club – Feeling creative? Join the Art Club! Art Club gives students the opportunity to develop their artistic talents before school. Regular meetings provide studio time for students to work on group or independent projects, brainstorm for fundraisers, create artwork for art competitions, and most importantly - to have fun! Chess – Who doesn’t love to play chess? Whether you are a novice or a warhorse, come join us! Chess Club meets on Fridays after school from 4:15–5:45pm. All levels are welcome to join! If you have any questions, see Ms. Epperson.
Cross Country Intramurals – Cross country is a distance running club open to all students during the 2nd 9 weeks. Whether you are an experienced runner or are looking to stay in shape for other sports, cross country is a great opportunity to improve your athletic ability! We will meet Wednesdays after school. Dashing Dragons – This is a club for any girl from 6th through 8th grade…no running experience required! Each meeting will consist of a small group centered around girl power, confidence building and teamwork followed by a short run! The last meeting of the year is a celebratory 5k to highlight how much our running has improved over the semester. Contact Ms. Moore, Ms. Fogg, Ms. Stavropoulos, Ms. McWalters or Ms. Hannel with interest or questions.
Engineering and Technology Club – The Engineering and Technology Club is open to all students who have a desire to be successful inventors, designers, creative problem solvers, responsible citizens and leaders in a technological society. Students will have an opportunity to participate in design challenges and technology competitions, and gain valuable skills for the technology driven world we live in. Fantasy Football Club – The Fantasy Football Club meets bi-weekly in the mornings during the NFL season to discuss current happenings and weekly progress. The students compete in a friendly fashion, while learning more about football statistics. We welcome club members of all levels. For more information, contact Mr. Praskovich.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) – FCA is a local, national and international Christian Ministry created to see the world impacted for Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. FCA typically meets once a month. For more information, please contact Coach Coffield, Coach Rosson, Ms. Petit, Mr. Walker, or Mr. Berger.
Future Business Leaders of America (or FBLA) – FBLA is a club for any student and no previous experience is required. The FBLA-Middle Level program introduces students to the world of leadership and business with career exploration, community service, and immersive educational programs. Club meetings will give students a chance to gain an appreciation of business and the free enterprise system through a variety of leadership programs, community service projects, and educational activities. Students will meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 8:00–8:30 am in Room 1225. Please contact Ms. Solano for more information.
Garden Club – Do you like playing in the dirt? This year we will be planning and planting the first DeSana garden! Be a part of laying the groundwork for a new DeSana tradition as we learn about plants, serve our school and community and enjoy the fruits of our labor. Meetings will be weekly in the fall/spring and twice a month during the winter. Ms. Foster and Ms. Kilgore are sponsoring this new club. Listen for announcements about our first meeting.
Geography Club – What in the world? If you are interested in discovering more about the world and preparing for the National Geographic Geography Bee, this is the club for you! We will meet 1-2 times a month and examine different cultures, features, and geographic regions of the world. Come explore with Ms. Fogg and Mr. Jones! (Students do not have to be in the Geography Club to participate in the school wide Geography Bee).
Hockey Intramurals – Club participants will learn the basic rules and skills on how to play hockey. The club will meet periodically in the mornings starting the last 9 weeks of school. For more information, contact Mr. Praskovich.
HOSA – Desana has a HOSA chapter! Any student interested in the healthcare profession, this is the club for you. HOSA is dedicated to educating and preparing future healthcare professionals. See Ms. Strader, room 2207, on the 8th grade hallway for more information.
Junior Beta Club – What is Jr. Beta? The National Junior Beta Club Mission Statement: To promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students. For more information, see Ms. Lyons or Ms. Whitaker.
Just One Africa – The Just One Africa club meets once a month before school. Students clean and string beads for bracelets and necklaces that are then sold to collect money for water filters. The water filters are distributed throughout rural Kenyan communities. While students string beads, they have opportunities to socialize and learn more about the Just One Africa organization. The club sponsor is Ms. Dockter.
Maker Club – Hey Dragons! Do you like to make things? Build, create, tinker, explore, code? Then the After School Maker Club may be a good fit for you! This year will be the first year for the Maker Club, and this year’s members will set the tone to start a fun afterschool “making” tradition here at DeSana. The club will meet twice monthly, from 4:15-5:30, beginning in September! See Ms. MacMillan if you have any questions.
Math Club/Team- Math Club provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge of math beyond the classroom. Students can expect to explore careers that utilize math and to compete in competitions and contests. The Math Club will meet before school throughout the year. This year the sponsors are Ms. Carter and Mr. Praskovich.
Photography – Calling all novice or experienced photographers! Join the DeSana Photography Club and spend an exciting Fall learning to operate sophisticated and easy-to-use digital camera equipment, as well as how to take clear, sharp, and creative digital photos that all of your friends and family will view with envy! It promises to be a fun-filled and exciting time as you participate in club meetings, photography expeditions to wonderful sites around the metro-Atlanta area and beyond, and DeSana’s third Annual Exhibition of Photographic Art. The Photography Club will meet before school one or two times a month, and on five or six weekends (for photography expeditions) in the Fall only. A list of all club meeting dates and photo expedition dates and destinations will be given out at the first Photography Club meeting. See Ms. North, club sponsor, for more information.
Robotics – The DeSana Robotics Club is open to all students and is an opportunity to design, build, program, and compete with small scale competitive robots. The robots are designed around a challenge and teams will be entered into multiple competitions. Students will meet weekly before school, with other opportunities to come in and work on the robots. Science Olympiad – We are proud to offer Science Olympiad as an after school club. Science Olympiad is a science competition for teams of up to 15 students competing in 23 different science related events. As a club we meet once a week to prepare for a minimum of 1 Regional Competition. We encourage parent volunteers to help support our students in this innovative science club. Club sponsors are Ms. Sim, Ms. Parow and Ms. Hannel.
Soccer Intramurals – Attention all future soccer stars! Intramural soccer is open to all students in the spring. We will meet 7:30-8:30am on Wednesdays. Students will need to wear shin guards and cleats for practice on the football field. Space is limited, if interested, please see Coach Coffield or Ms. Hubbard.
TED-Ed – TED-Ed is about sparking curiosity and celebrating ideas. You will learn to give a presentation and will connect with other clubs worldwide. We will meet at least twice a month before school. Sponsored by Ms. Bryson.
Volleyball Intramurals – Volleyball intramurals are for 7th and 8th grade girls and will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:15pm during the 1st 9 weeks. Learn basic skills and drills with an emphasis on play time. To play, you must have a pair of closed-toed tennis shoes/sneakers.
