The focus of the Foreign Language program at DeSana Middle is to give students a foundation for foreign language studies. The program consists of cultural and grammatical studies that help students appreciate Hispanic societies and their customs. The course curriculum supports the development of 21st-century skills necessary for today’s global market.

The Spanish I course and the Native Speakers Spanish I offered to DeSana eighth-grade students gives them an opportunity to earn a level one world language high school credit in middle school. The Spanish I course engages students in novice-level conversation and comprehension. Students will be able to interpret written and spoken language and present concepts and ideas in the target language (Spanish). The Native Speakers Spanish I* course is designed for heritage or native learners of Spanish. This course can accommodate students from a wide range of backgrounds, from those who are minimally functional (can comprehend Spanish but are not able to speak fluently, read, or write) to those who are more proficient and/or literate in Spanish.

Eighth-grade Forsyth County students who successfully complete Spanish level 1 earn high school credit for the course and begin level II upon entering high school.

*Placement test for Spanish Speakers Course is required.
