What is Forsyth Virtual Academy (FVA)?
FVA is a Forsyth County Schools program designed to provide students with an opportunity to engage in a virtual learning environment that does not require the physical presence in a traditional school setting.
Is FVA content self-paced?
No, the curriculum for FVA has been designed to be flexible in nature, while providing the structural organization of a traditional classroom. In our virtual format, time and location constraints are lifted for students, while coursework deadlines are clearly communicated and must be upheld.
What is the FVA School Calendar?
Other than a staggered start date, FVA mirrors the yearly approved school calendar published by FCSS.
Will my student be able to participate in athletics and activities if he/she is enrolled at FVA?
Yes, because FVA is a supplemental program for students, even though a student may be enrolled as a full-time virtual student, he/she still has full access to the 'base' school facilities, activities and extracurriculars. * Students must also meet each program's minimum requirements for participation
What is considered a student's "base" school?
If a student is enrolled full time at FVA, the middle or high school that he/she was originally assigned to by FCSS, will be considered his/her "base" school.
What Courses Are Offered through FVA?Home Schooling
My child has been involved in regular home school. How will Forsyth Virtual count his work done while in home school?
Because every home school curriculum can be different, FCS will need to review any documentation parents have of their child's school work so the district can compare it with the requirements for the State of Georgia.
Is Forsyth Virtual the same as home schooling?
Students enrolled in Forsyth Virtual do their learning at home, but they are participating in a program of FCS and are considered to be active students of Forsyth County School System. The curriculum used is approved by the school district and State of Georgia for earning middle and high school credits that can lead to a high school diploma.
What kind of diploma will my child receive after completing Forsyth Virtual?
Students who complete all the requirements for graduation will receive a high school diploma from the Forsyth County school that they are districted to.
My child has an IEP and has been enrolled in Special Education. Does Forsyth Virtual Academy (FVA) enroll students with special needs?
Yes, as a public school, FVA accepts students with disabilities. The main issue to be considered is whether or not the independent nature of online instruction will be the best fit for a student. Online Learning Environment
How do I get help from teachers if I am having difficulty with my course(s)?
Teachers will provide feedback on any assignments or projects you complete. Parents can also contact teachers via email or through the course message center. In addition, each teacher has regularly scheduled online office hours. During the scheduled time, students interact with the teacher and other students in a virtual classroom.
How will students be evaluated?
Progress is measured through quizzes, exams, written essays, assignments, projects and semester exams.
Where can I get a course pacing chart?
Course pacing charts are provided in each course. These charts will help students plan their work so that they will complete the course by the end of the school year. Pacing charts are typically found in the Course Information tab in Angel, the learning management system.
How much time does it take to complete a one-credit course?
FVA runs on a semester calendar. Coursework for a single credit course should be completed by the end of the semester. A one-credit course is designed to take about 150 hours. As a general guideline, in addition to the time students spend online, they should also count on spending time reading, completing assignments, and studying for tests and exams. Therefore, students may need to spend approximately 150 hours to complete a course. This time is a guideline and will vary according to course, study habits, etc. Students should assume that a half-credit course will take half as much time as a one-credit course and will be completed in a single quarter.
What role do the teachers play in Forsyth Virtual Academy?
Teachers are the heart of Forsyth Virtual. It is the role of the teachers to meet individual learning needs of the students enrolled in their courses. Teachers hold biweekly online class sessions during which students can ask questions and have discussions with teachers and classmates. Teachers are also available by phone and email, and students are encouraged to contact their teachers with questions.
Our family travels quite a bit. Would that be a problem with Forsyth Virtual?
As long as internet access is available, students can log into ItsLearning and get to their courses. For trips during which internet access may not be available, students can work ahead on assignments that may be due during that time, but must communicate this with his/her teacher in advance.
How do I know whether or not my child would be successful doing online learning?
Some of the qualities that we have seen in the most successful online students are:
- The ability to work and learn independently.
- The willingness to ask for help when needed. There are many opportunities to get help from teachers, from other students, or from technical support. Students have to be willing to make use of those resources and let someone know if they don't understand something.
- Some internal motivation to succeed in the program. Students who are forced into an online learning environment will be less likely to be successful.
There are some things that parents can do to help children succeed in FVA.
Help students set up a schedule for school to follow every day. Students should plan on approximately one hour of work per day for every class they are enrolled in, plus some extra time for outside readings or writing papers.
Provide an area for students to work that has limited distractions and where all needed materials are available.
Encourage students to discuss online work. These discussions can allow parents to gauge their child’s understanding and comfort level with the work that is expected.
Do I have to be at home all the time my child is doing schoolwork?
That is not required, however it is important for children to know that parents are interested in their school work. It is unrealistic for most school-aged students to handle the total responsibility of an online learning environment without any parental intervention. FVA does not require students to do all of their coursework during traditional school hours, so it may be beneficial for some families to schedule some of their "school time" during hours that parents are home to provide support.
What kinds of safeguards are in place to keep my child safe while working on the internet?
The main content of all of the FVA courses is available directly through FCS' secure, online student classroom area. In some cases, links provided by teachers direct students to other websites so students can take advantage of the wealth of educational information available online. Beyond that, good parental supervision and setting some guidelines for internet use that match your family values will go a long way in protecting your children from unwanted information on the internet. Students attending FVA must comply with the Responsible Use Policy for Students.
Do we have to have High Speed Internet Access to participate in Forsyth Virtual?
Yes, high speed Internet access definitely makes the experience of learning online much more satisfying. It is recommended that families invest in Broadband or DSL.
Are there requirements for a student computer?
Yes. Every Forsyth Virtual student must have access to a desktop or laptop to participate in the program. Technology equipment will not be provided for you. There may be some additional technology requirements depending on the student's course load. See the section on technology requirements.
What tools are available for students to communicate with each other?
FCS features a secure, online student classroom area within our learning management system, itslearning, with opportunities for students to participate in discussion boards with other Forsyth Virtual students. Topics of discussion may include music, books, movies, politics, sports, etc. These discussion boards are monitored by FVA staff and provide a great way for students to talk about their talents and interests.
As a parent, how can I check on my son/daughter's progress in Forsyth Virtual?
Parents will have access to Parent Portal to view student grades, assessments, and schedule. In addition, the parent should have the student’s login information for itslearning.

What do I do if I want to return to a traditional setting?
The first step is to notify the administration at FVA that you would like to return to your base school. Once you have made the notification, you will need to contact the counseling department at your base school to set up an appointment to discuss re-enrolling in that school.
