I am excited to begin my 2nd year at Matt Elementary. This is my 8th year teaching. I previously taught for 6 years in Fulton County. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education/Special Education from University of North Georgia in 2011 and my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Kennesaw State University in 2016. My husband, David, and I have two dogs, Finley and Emma, and a cat named Pearl. We recently moved to Cumming from the Buckhead area of Atlanta to be closer to family. Outside of school, I enjoy traveling, running, and spending time with friends and family.
I have been a speech-language pathologist for eleven years. Prior to that, I was a speech-language pathology aide for two years while earning my Masters degree. I obtained my undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2004 from The University of Georgia and my Masters in Speech-Language Pathology from The University of West Georgia in 2007. I hold my Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from The American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and my license in Speech-Language Pathology from the Georgia Licensing Board for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. I have spent time working with Babies Can't Wait, in private clinics, nursing homes, and schools. My clinical experiences include working in acquired brain injury, feeding and swallowing, early speech and language development, fluency, cognitive development, receptive/expressive language disorders and articulation disorders. I participate in ongoing continuing education in these areas. I have been in Forsyth County Schools for the last three years and at Matt Elementary for the last two years.
I'm a New Yorker who came to Georgia for the weather and stayed for the people. I'm so excited to be starting my 4th year of teaching in Georgia at Matt Elementary! I have my dual certificate in Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities as well as an advanced degree in Literacy. When I'm not teaching you can find me at the gym, cooking/trying a new restaurant, or playing with my fur babies (a dog named Scarlett and a cat named Emma). My motto in the classroom: Always try and give your best effort.
For the last 3 years, I have been the instructional aide in this 3rd - 5th MOID classroom and have loved every minute! It challenged and inspired me to step back into the role of teacher. I was born, raised and educated in South Africa. I received a B.A. in Education from the University of South Africa and went on to teach 3rd Grade. The following year I traveled to Europe and worked as an Au Pair. Once I moved to the United States I was married and got my degree and teaching credentials instated here. I taught 3rd and 4th Grade for 4 years in Merritt Island Florida. For a while, I stepped away from the elementary education world to work in adult education. It was lots of fun and gave me a whole different perspective on teaching and learning. During this time I had 2 daughters who are now 12 and 14 and attend Liberty Middle and West Forsyth High. Life has brought me a full circle back to elementary school and I could not be more delighted!
